Saturday Centus: There is a Better Way

Uh oh.  The geek's back and participating in the Saturday Centus.  Yeah,  I know it's not Saturday but I lost a couple of hours traveling and I'm a bit behind.

No, Evil Twin, I did not say I have a Big Behind.

Sheesh.

Anyway, the mission is to write a short story, 100 words or less, using a prompt.

This week's prompt starts my travel-related story:

There is a Better Way

It was the 11th anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Centers.

Airline travel is no longer a huge hassle.  Food is again "free" and it doesn't cost you to check your bags or use a pillow or blanket.  Gate agents and flight attendants are pleasant and happy to see you.

Airplanes are loaded from the rear door in order by row.  Passengers are not allowed to take over-sized carry-on bags onto the airplane.

Security screening is simple.  There is no special service for first-class passengers.  Everyone must pass inspection by the robots.  I will say, though, that their hands can be a bit cold.

Ha! A nice robotic twist! Cold hands. Are you sure they weren't zombies?

hee hee

that's good to hear :)

@Quirky - I think they are currently zombies!

@Belle - Thanks!

@Jackie - I'm hopeful.

I loved this!! What a fun little idea!

I think your blog is adorable and I love your blog name... so naturally I'm now a new follower *waves*

Cold hands would be a small price to pay to get through security faster. Not to mention having FOOD on an airplane again. Cute twist on the prompt. Kat

Ahhh. Prior to 9/11/01, it was all so simple and naive.

As a family, we used to love going to the airport and walking up to the observation tower and watching the planes and people coming and going.

Now, you say goodbye to your loved ones far, far from the airplane and have an hour to sit and wonder if you're going to be blown to bits before you see them again.

I hope that there is a better way some day. Just not with robots!Great take on the prompt.~Ames

I'd like to think we could find a better way, too! Great story!

@Jen - Thanks. Welcome to the madness!

@Kat - Yeah, cold hands but if it's quick and effective, I'm ok with it. ;-)

@Dana - Absolutely. That was my point. It's crazy, scary, and a bit pathetic. I really don't think TSA is all that effective in their screening process.

@Ames - Thanks. OK. No robots for you.

@noexcuses - Thanks!

call me crazy but I rather like a quick strip search

I'm with Jean, strip search away! How else am I going to get my thrills? (Robots are acceptable, as well!)

Having travelled a lot lately, I have to say that this is one fantasy I can wholeheartedly support, even with cold robot hands.

honeypiehorse said...

Your fantasy world is insane. I mean, flight attendants happy to see you? Come on.

Loved it! Well, the cold hands was a bit much. I've never been felt up by a robot before ... wait. Take that back. I remember Susie, back in college - very robotic in the sack - had to let her go. (wink)

ReformingGeek said...

@Jean - If they make the robots look like Matt Damon or Will Smith.

@Joan - Yep. Robots imaged as Matt or Will can do the strip searches.

@Mike - Absolutely. It's crazy how different the security screenings are at the different airports.

@honeypie - A girl can dream.

@Marvin - Oops. Poor Susie.

LOL, too funny. I'll be going on my first trip hopefully, in the next few months. I'm really anxious about deciding on the pat down or x-rays. Oh for the good old days, ha.

I have been strip searched once - damn, that was humilitating. I don't fly normally because of my fears, but having a less stress at the inspection point would help.

Ryan said...

Bring on the cold hands, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Reffie: I don't know if you checked back at my blog - you won the Bloggerhood Book! I need your address to mail it to you. E-mail me at

a.00dozo@yahoo.com

If you don't want it, I can send it to someone else - let me know. Thanks.

@Viki - Maybe your airport won't have the x-ray machines yet. That's just crazy!

@00dozo - Oh my. Stripped searched. I can't imagine.

Also, I will send you my address!

@ryan - Yeah. Just about anything is better than the current process.

Leeuna said...

Wow, Reffie, what a great story. And the robots thing may just catch on. Maybe they'll use hand warmers.

There is a price to pay for everything - warm hands or quick getaway! Nice write.

Like where you took this one--robotic hands.

I am amazed at what different people think of for their SC.

If you are a frequent air-traveller you noticed these details; how it was before and after 9/11. My son was born in December of 2001, and I made several transatlantic voyages with him and then after 2004 with both him and his sister - a baby and a toddler. So I know what you are talking about. My latest trip was two years ago. I don't know when I will be able to afford another trip. When I do, it will be interesting to see how passengers will be treated. I hope that the airlines continue to be careful however they conduct the security checks. I can put up with standing in line, being searched and having to remove my shoes, if it means that we will get to our destination alive and well.

Great Centus! Unusual and unexpected solution to the challenge.
Very well done.
Best wishes,
Anna

@Leeuna - Thanks. Let's hope for some gloves!

@nimaruichi - Thanks.

@Teresa - Thanks. At least they don't have to worry about pedicures.

@Anna - Thanks. Yeah. Air travel is crazy and I'm not thrilled about these new x-ray machines, either.

It always amazes me that we all start with the same few words and then our minds just go everywhere.

This was really cool. I loved the concept of this (actually would love it in reality)

Great writing here...

And I'm still laughing at your header picture. Are those ferrets? Seriously, that is the funniest header I've seen in a long time. They looks so astonished!

Thanks for linking!

This was a fun take on the prompt, and I wish most of it would come true!

You keep nailing these 100-word stories. Not easy to do. Another great one!

I thought they already had robots handling inspections. Although, the present day robots are made in China and therefore are missing parts. Hence, the process is slow going. Much like taking a slow boat to China.

ReformingGeek said...

@Jenny - Thanks. Something needs to change. Air travel is sometimes a painful experience.

Those are meercats on my header, with a domestic orange tabby head in the center.

@Sue - Thanks. Me, too.

@Lauren - Thanks. They are definitely missing some parts.

Ivy said...

Lol. Their hands are a bit cold and their personalities leave left to be desired... oh wait we're talking about robots here aren't we? Sorry.

Of course now you have to go through a full body scan, which I have to say I will have fun with next time I'm at the airport. I feel bad for the person who has to sit and look at everyone naked all day, might as well give them something to laugh at.

i hope this does happen some day. not sure about thehe robots though, unless like someone said its matt damon or someone else pretty lol
