You blew off a 4-year football scholarship at Duke and volunteered for the Army right out of high school, leaving your small town and the Leave It To Beaver life for a 2-year stint as an Army Ranger. You went to Korea, patrolling the DMZ, looking at the N. Koreans looking back at you through the sight of your rifle. You lived in a Quonset hut with no heat in the bitter cold. The war had just ended but tensions were high.
