Things That Go Boom in the Night

Hearing a window-shaking boom in early February is usually not a good thing.  It reminded me of the early morning space shuttle boom back in 2003.  Not good.

It was Wednesday night and the geek household was settled in to catch up on some DVR TV.  Oreo Cat was having a good pre-bed snooze on top of the couch next to his favorite lap (Hubby).  Then we heard the sound.

Oreo wakes up and looks around.

Hubby:  "What was that?"
Me:  "A sonic boom?"
Oreo:  [raises head] "Mew?"
Evil Twin:  "Aliens."

Hubby:  "Probably an earthquake."
Me:  "Yeah, Texas gets those now with all that gas drilling.  I heard they started frakking up near Southlake."
Oreo:  [lays head down, closes eyes]
Evil Twin:  "Aliens"

We were all wrong.  It was a meteorite.  It made a boom and a flash.  Many of the locals reported seeing a bright light in the sky.  It wasn't a plane and it wasn't even Superman.

Evil Twin:  "Aliens."

Meteorite 154/365

This isn't the rock that caused the boom and flash but it's a cool photo, huh?

On another note, I ran the marathon and we had a nice vacation afterwards.  Brown Bear will show off some of the souvenirs, including my finisher's medal.  Oreo supervises:

So, um, will the next meteor be the end for us?

Evil Twin:  "Aliens."

Whoa. That would be a frightening sound. I've seen two meteors fall in my life and it was an amazing sight. I didn't hear anything, but we were in the car both times. That picture is cool and it is great you finished the marathon. Congrats!

Wow! You heard the space shuttle explode. I can't even imagine witnessing that tragedy. It's probably one of those sounds that stays in your head.

Hearing a meteorite is pretty damn cool. We just hear an occasional alien space ship cleaning the kitchen floor. Oh, that's the Roomba. But I swear we don't own one.

I'm glad you had a nice vacation. I have to say that I am in awe of your marathon runs. How did you do?

I saw a large meteor burn itself up, once. Impressive display. No sound.

If you heard a sound, it was probably aliens.

Or the whole thing could have been a massive fireworks display.

I'm still thinking aliens.

But what does a Bear know about anything?

Belle - Thanks! I've never seen a meteor fall. That would be cool. We've seen the meteors fly through the sky, though.

Lauren - Thanks. I did ok in the marathon. I didn't have a lot of energy from being sick but I finished in 4:47, under 5 hours which was my revised goal.

Yeah, we heard the Columbia go boom. We were in bed half-awake. We were fully awake after that. We had no idea what it was at the time. Very sad. I see you have aliens, too. Sigh. They're everywhere.

Bear - Bears know where the honey is. Perhaps aliens bring bees. Buzz. Buzz.

Earthquakes? Wow. Guess what just started here... FRAKKING! I really don't like the whole thing, now it just got worse. We have about a dozen drills within a 1/2 hour radius of here.

Congratulations on the marathon! That's really awesome! I've been thinking about taking up running. I need something to release stress. It's either that or yoga. Could I chose two things farther apart to pick from?

Just be grateful that the meteor didn't hit the moon and bump it out of its axis.

It would be real bad for all of us.

Real bad.

Even for Evil Twin. AND her aliens.

*grin*

Aliens launched the meteorite - watch for shuffling zombies in the backyard -- though you can out-run them!!!

@Ivy - Thanks. I hope you remain free of earthquakes. I do yoga and run. They complement each other.

@Quirky - I think it will be cows jumping over he moon that knock it out of orbit. Oops.

@Wonder Wye - Oh dear. I will keep an eye out for those zombies. Gulp.

I'm with Evil Twin, definitely aliens.

Most of the booms we hear around my house are from booming radios, even with my windows closed! Of course, most of them are aliens, but not from outer space & probably illegal ;)

Is there any kind of boom other than a sonic one?

ReformingGeek said...

@Ziva - I think the invasion has begun.

@Collette - We have a few of those here, too.

@VE - Ha! What? You've never seen an aural boom?

So the aliens have arrived in Texas, have they? Carol would you take care of them for us before they go global. I have a lot of stuff to do and haven't the time to fend off aliens. Hey and when they say, "We come in peace." You know that isn't true right?

Think Aliens and go watch the movie "Signs."

I liked the cat wearing the finisher's medal. And it almost looks like a bottle of booze next to her. LOL.
