28 Days of Writing - Social Media

I've noticed I spend quite a bit of time using social media, specifically Facebook.  In general, I like it.  It's a good way to stay connected with people I don't see often and for me to be exposed to different types of people that I've "met" through blogging.   I enjoy seeing my friends' photos and knowing what's happening in their day-to-day lives.  A few jokes and videos here and there make it fun.

Of course there are things I find bothersome:
  • I don't need to know about every meal you've had today.
  • I don't need to know about your religious or political views over and over again.  In other words, that is primarily all that you post and it comes across as if you are trying to convert people to your way of thinking.
  • I am somewhat bothered if I make an effort to comment or "like" your posts but you rarely do the same for me.
  • I roll my eyes when you frequently use Facebook to promote your business interests on your personal page.
  • I know your children/grandchildren are wonderful but I don't need to see photos of them every day.
I realize, though, that it's your personal page, and I respect that you can post what you want.  Just keep in mind that you risk losing your audience if you don't show some discretion.

Finally, Facebook is a tool.  Use it and don't let it use you.  Don't let it replace personal contact with real people.....only fake people.   Ha!

Um....Evil Twin?  What ARE you posting on my page?  Step away from the keyboard, NOW!

See what the others have to say about social media today.

I actually like the occasional food picture if it is something special... I have to admit! What I don't like is when someone rants without saying specifics. Like "something is VERY bad in my life and there is someone who knows why and they are so rude!" Those bug me.

I agree with almost all of Evil Twin's observations. There are some folks I'd like to introduce to Pinterest simply to get that crap out of my feed so I can find out what's really going on in their lives.

I agree with your likes and dislikes, and that it is a good tool to stay connected with friends and family.

Katherine, that whole non-specific status update bugs me too.

I couldn't agree more with your thoughts about Facebook. It's why I use it less and less.

Hey, will you be my Facebook friend?

Good points about Facebook. But I don't "unfriend" people. I just click off notices of things with which I can no longer be bothered.

But the point you're making is clear. It's not social media — it's anti-social media. But perhaps I have misread Evil Twin on that.

Blessings and Bear hugs!

Ecoolvil twin is smart! I really dislike hearing "I love my children so much". Doh! I sure hope you do. You're so cool to not even advertise your blog on your page BUT I sure wish I'd known about it sooner as you know ;)

@Katherine - Yeah, those "pointed" yet fague rants are eye-rollers.

@Cheryl - Hee Hee. Pinterest = huge time-sucker!

@Linda - Those cryptic status updates just scream, "I need attention!"

@Noname - Of course I will be your friend!

@Rob-bear - It sure seems like it is anti-social media. Our world is changing.

@Michelle - I'm glad you found my blog!

This is so true, Reffie. And furthermore, all those food photos make me hungry!

I am completely on board with all of the gripes you listed. The one that bugs me most of all is the food photographs. Why is that such a big thing? I could almost understand it if people posted pictures of food that they cooked themselves, but why do people insist on photographing every meal they eat at a restaurant?

Facebook is great for connecting with people I haven't seen in a long time. I go in waves, though, as far as posting or checking in with people. I may not log in for weeks and then I have a spate of posting. Sort of like blogging! Ha!
